We're Back

Hello Readers (or lack thereof),

It has been a while since we have last posted. We have been really busy, but I assure you we haven't forgotten. We are up and running again, and we will have all the things you've missed. My weekly playlist will be up soon, I am reviewing A Serious Man the latest Coen Brothers film, and there will be much more to look forward to. Josh will not be blogging this week for he vacationing in Punta Cana, wherever the hell that is. [EDIT: I am back, and Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic!- Josh.]

Stop and Remember

Hey guys, it's Joshua. Sorry that we haven't posted in a few weeks. I am going to a camp reunion today, and these are my thoughts:

The thing about camp is that you can start over. When you are at camp, you don't have to be the nerd others called you. You can be the star and make new friends. A kid who is hated by everyone at school can be loved at camp. It feels so good to be with your friends, right? That's why the camp reunion is so good. You can be that person again, the superstar. I personally love going to camp reunions, where I can see all of my friends again.

You can meet up with the ones you love. I personally loved some of the kids at Island Lake Camp, so I hope I can see them today. It feels so good to be with other kids. It's almost like you are seeing an old friend. Being in the city, no one really lives near me, so it's nice to know that there is a place we can all meet again. All of this is corny and cheesy- but it is more than true.

I could laugh about old things at camp. At Island Lake, we had a Color War. In the finale of Color War, we had to sing a song. I was on the "Nerds" team, and we sang a song called "Stop And Remember." It went something like this:

Stop and remember/It ain't over yet/Don't say September. Let's walk down that dirt road/So what if we're aimless/Our bliss still shows.

That song captures what it was like to be at Island Lake. While September is long gone, it's still nice to stop and remember about camp. To stop and remember about all the fun times I had at camp. To stop and remember, and know that even though camp is over, the memories will always stay. It's cheesy, as I said before, but it is so true. Ask any of the 500 kids at Island Lake, and they will tell you the same. Trust me.

------- Edit: I am at the reunion on my phone. So far, I have seen some friends, but there are some I am still looking for. The ones I have seen love to talk about camp, as I said. Gotta go now. I will update later. -Joshua

Joshua's Weekly Playlist- Movie Edition! 11/07/10

Hello, readers of this blog- it's Joshua!
As Austin said, I do slightly more mainstream music for my playlist. I hope you like the songs that I picked out for this week.
So, on with the playlist!
As you all know from my review of Easy A, I really liked the movie. However, the soundtrack really stuck out for me, which I didn't mention in my review. The film opened with a fun song called "Change of Seasons," by Sweet Things- it got stuck in my head long after the movie was done. The song was not made for the movie, but it probably will become really associated with the movie. Here's the Easy A video. Unlike Austin's playlist, I have different songs, completely unrelated to eachother. Okay, the next one is from a movie, but still.
The next one is from what I consider to be the best movie of the year- Inception.
(If you know me, you probably expected me to say Toy Story 3).
Actually, the next two. If you've see the movie, you know the song when they wake up is a french song. What is it, you may ask? It's called Non, Je ne regrette rien- which means No, I Have No Regrets. Really, it does. If you've seen the movie, you'll know how strange it is. The actress who played Mal in Inception actually played the singer (Edith Piaf) in La Vie En Rose... a movie about her life. The director didn't want to have that happen, but Hans Zimmer, the composer for the film, had already written music around it. And here is the song.
Also, if you've seen the movie, the last scene where (SPOILER ALERT) the top is spinning (END SPOILER) has music, and that music is AWESOME! At least, I think so. It's instrumental, but the music is just so beautiful. Hans Zimmer is a genius- he took four chords, and made them all amazing. It's called Time, and click here to listen to it.

This week I do not have a playlist, but just a band. The definition of the word "Playlist" will vary every week. Just so you know, I do not like "fake" music, anything with auto-tune I hate. A Review of Easy A

Hey guys it's Josh. I saw Easy A over the weekend, and here's my review on it:

1. There are so many things I want to say about this movie I've rewritten this opening sentence about 6 times. However, all of these things I wanted to write were positive. Despite the fact that everybody calls this movie as a Chick Flick, I personally enjoyed it. Calling this just a chick flick would be calling The Social Network just a drama. Both of those movies are so much more than just the genres they are tied to- but that's where the similarities end. Easy A is about a girl who fakes losing her virginity to get popular, but it soon starts getting out of control. This girl starts wearing an A on her chest after reading a book called the Scarlet Letter (Which I haven't read). Sounds interesting, right? While the story is already interesting it's the actors that really bring this movie to life. Emma Stone as the main character Olive tells the story through a series of webcasts, something that isn't really referenced much but implied throughout the movie. She is a great character, and Emma puts herself into the role really well. That's not to say the other cast members didn't do well. Amanda Bynes as Marianne- an ultra Christian- almost steals the show, were it not for Olive's parents, played by Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci, who provide some of the film's heart. 
2. So far you've heard me say the movie's perfect. The casting is great, the story is great, and everything is just awesome. It's not perfect. The love interest isn't introduced until halfway through the movie, which can mess it up at times. Marianne didn't have enough character to her, though she was my favorite character. These are only minor criticisms in an otherwise fun movie. Though there is one huge complaint. Or should I say, one Hughes complaint. Throughout the movie, there were shout outs to every movie he made, but at the same time the movie tried to BE a John Hughes movie. If they didn't pile up the shout outs, then it would have worked, but I don't think Hughes put a shout out to many other movies during his career (okay, except for Star Wars in Ferris Bueller's Day Off). I could be wrong, though. But, strangely, that is still a minor complaint when you have a movie as good as this one. While it may have too many shout outs, and while some characters could have been more developed, it was a great film with great dialogue, great acting, and just an overall great feel.
   Easy A gets a B+, or, since I don't give grades to movies, an 7.5/10.
   WARNING: If you don't like the song Pocketful of Sunshine, do NOT see this movie. But really, who doesn't like that song?
   Rated PG-13 for some obviously adult content, and language.
